Colonel Walter Herbert was an influential Pakistani Christian leader in the 1980's. He was born in Lucknow in India, but spent most of his life in Lahore. He held several elected posts in government; although he first entered mainstream politics during a government which was handpicked by General Zia Ul Haq after a military coup. Col. Herbert believed in being involved with the government and trying to affect change from within, rather than criticising from the sidelines. Positions held by Col Herbert included that of Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Defence. He was elected Member of the National Assembly several times and also served as a key diplomat at the United Nations. Towards the end of his political career he joined the Pakistan People's Party. Many people credit Col Herbert for emphasizing the plight of Pakistani Christians, in what was otherwise a terrible time for minorities in Pakistan. He was widely praised for walking out of the National Assembly while the blasphemy law was being passed by parliament.
