Instead of steam driven cables to launch F-24Ns, make a 300' long magnetic track (like the magnetic high-speed trains in Japan) and manipulate the fields for catapulting and trapping. Maybe just 1,000 lbs of magnets could be built into the jet's airframe/wings saving massive space and weight?
