Are you a jigsaw master? Assemble a scrambled image faster than your opponents. With over a thousand photos to choose from, you'll probably never see the same picture twice! Quickly assemble the pieces of the puzzle to match the target image. The game will begin with the pieces "spilled" across the game window. Unlike a real jigsaw puzzle, your pieces will all start picture-side up. However, like a real jigsaw puzzle, many will not be in the correct orientation and will need to be rotated. Rotate and move pieces to connect them. Once connected, pieces remain connected for the rest of the game. Continue connecting pieces, or groups of pieces, until the puzzle is completed. To see what the pieces will look like when correctly assembled, refer to the target image in the upper left corner. You can increase the size of the target image or make it go away completely. You can use the magnifying glass to get a close-up view of any piece. There are several different size puzzles. Puzzles with more pieces have longer time limits. When you finish assembling the puzzle, you will get a time bonus based on your time remaining. If your time runs out before you complete the puzzle, you won't get a time bonus, but you'll still get points for the pieces you connected. Everyone in a particular tournament will get the same puzzle picture. Moving Pieces: To move a piece, click and drag it to the desired location. Clicking a piece that is partially obscured by another piece brings the clicked-on piece to the foreground. Rotating Pieces: Right-click on a piece to rotate it 90 degrees clockwise. Right click on a piece while holding down the Control (or Ctrl) key to rotate the piece 90 degrees counterclockwise. Connecting Pieces: If a piece is moved adjacent to a connecting piece (and both are in the same orientation), there is a "success" sound effect and the two pieces are joined into a single, larger piece. This new, larger piece can now be manipulated in all the same ways that single-sized pieces can be manipulated: dragged, rotated, and connected. The Target Picture: At the start of the game, the target picture is displayed at 50% of actual size, in the upper left hand corner of the playing area. Hitting the space bar increases the size of the target picture to 100%. Hitting the spacebar again removes the target picture completely. Hitting the spacebar again returns the target picture to its default size of 50%. As long as the space bar is held down, the target image will be in the foreground. But as soon as you release the space bar, the target picture will revert to the background (that is, displayed behind any pieces that are in that part of the screen). Magnifying Glass: Hold the Shift key and click anywhere to make a magnifying class appear. Drag it around the screen to see pieces or parts of pieces at a higher magnification. The default magnification is 200%; controls on the handle allow you to increase or decrease the magnification. To hide the magnifying glass, double-click it, or just drag it off the edge of the game window. The first jigsaw puzzles, from the 1760s, were puzzles of maps created as educational aids for children. In 1909, jigsaw puzzles were so popular that Parker Brothers temporarily stopped selling games so that they could devote all of their factory space to producing jigsaw puzzles. In the early 20th Century, jigsaw puzzles were made of wood and cut by hand, making them too expensive for average wage-earners to afford, so a puzzle rental industry thrived, much like today's video rental industry. Cardboard die-cut jigsaw puzzles appeared during the Depression and became the first jigsaw puzzles affordable for the masses. The number of connections needed to complete a puzzle in Jigsaw Genius is always one less than the number of pieces.
