Battleship (armored cruiser more precise) Averof is the most important Hellenic warship of the 20th century that helped the empowerment of the modern sovereign Greek state in the region. Fighting 2 sea battles during the Balkan wars, taking part with the Entante Forces in WW1, escorting allied shipping during WW2, she now rests in Faliro bay, Athens, as a museum in perfect condition. Music theme: "Ο ναύτης του Αιγαίου" "The sailor of the Aegean"

Jul 8, 2008 - What's the other ship near to the Averof in 1:37 ??? It got number 16 on it.
ReiAyanami4ever Says:
Jul 8, 2008 - Its the destroyer "ΒΕΛΟΣ" ("VELOS") another museum ship. Its a Fletcher class destroyer we bought from USA during the 60s. I have some video from her too, maybe I'll upload them too.

Jul 12, 2008 - as far as i remember this destroyer anchored at bosphorus after ww1
ReiAyanami4ever Says:
Jul 12, 2008 - Yes you are right. She fought and repelled the Turkish fleet from the Aegean during the Balkan Wars and did some escorting for Entande in WW1. But its an armored(heavy) cruiser not a destroyer
sehirhatlarivapuru Says:
Jul 12, 2008 - ottoman navy officers were calling this ship devil(iblis in turkish) because it was far superior than whole ottoman navy back those times..thanks to averof greece had its dominiance over the aegea until ww1..then ottoman empire bought two brandnew cruisers from germany and guided them to bomb sevastopol apart.called yavuz(Magdeburg-class light cruiser) and midilli(Moltke-class battlecruiser)
ReiAyanami4ever Says:
Jul 12, 2008 - What happened to the cruisers? I guess they were not saved after the defeat of Germany?
sehirhatlarivapuru Says:
Jul 12, 2008 - actually during that era ottoman navy was pro-british while army was pro-german..ottoman empire bought two dreadnought battleships from Brits to obtain a supremacy over aegea and black sea..although the war broke out before delivery during the trials and Churchill did not want to risk the ships being used against the British so they didnt deliver those ships to us and in the same time refused to refund the payment(lovely brits...)
sehirhatlarivapuru Says:
Jul 12, 2008 - so germans bribed ottoman navy with two brandnew cruisers..they bombed russian black sea ports like odessa and sevastopol...during battle of dardanelles they served well and sunk monitors and even dreadnoughts..but then they overwhelmed and forced to ran into a minefield..the light cruiser sunk immidiately(143 POW 174 dead) other the battlecruiser was damaged but managed to survive..scrapped in 1972
ReiAyanami4ever Says:
Jul 12, 2008 - Thats normal procedure during war. Greek navy had ordered (and paid as usual) 2 Bretagne class super dreadnoughts but remained unfinished and scrapped by the French because of the out brake of WW1
