Everyone should have realized by now that there's something fishy going on with this whole hijab ban charade in Kosovo, especially since its official religion is Islam. What's more amazing is that nobody noticed that the main protagonist, Fatmire Jashari, has the same last name as her high school "Hamez Jashari". Nobody bothered to look this name up and mention that the high school was named after the brother and comrade of Adem Jashari, the infamous founder and commander of Kosovo Liberation Army who took part in mass lootings of military supplies during the 1997 rebellion in Albania which he smuggled to Kosovo over Serbian border and who is directly responsible for latent ethnic cleansing of Serbian civilians in Kosovo during the period of more than twenty years. ''Not only does religion damage the quest for independence, it damages our entire concept,'' said Rexhep Ismajli, the head of Kosovo's Academy of Science, a body that includes the province's leading thinkers. ''It damages Kosovo's society, it damages our vision.'' Fatmire Jashari, 18, was suspended from her high school in the central Kosovar town of Srbica - a former stronghold of the now-disbanded Kosovo Liberation Army, the guerrilla group that fought Serb forces in the 1998-1999 war. ''I hope I won't be pushed to choose between the two,'' she said. ''But if I am, I will choose the headscarf.'' Another girl in Fatmire's school and a student in a different school were also suspended this week. Kosovo's majority ethnic Albanians are mostly Muslim, although they are largely secular. The province's governmental institutions, which are supervised by a United Nations administration, are careful not to associate themselves with Islam, fearing that a strong Muslim identity could harm the province's quest for independence from Serbia, a predominantly Orthodox Christian country. Some countries in Europe remain hesitant to accede to the ethnic Albanian majority's demands for independence, and analysts in Kosovo have raised concerns that this skepticism is due in part to Kosovo's Islamic heritage. Western intelligence reports have suggested that Muslim-dominated regions in Bosnia and Kosovo could be recruitment grounds for the so-called ''white al-Qaida'' - Muslims with Western features who could blend into European or U.S. cities and execute terrorist attacks. Meanwhile, the debate over what kind of country Kosovo will be - if it becomes a country - continues. ''It was easy to proclaim adherence to the democratic principles of the West in during the repression of the Serb regime,'' said Dukagjin Gorani, an ethnic Albanian commentator. ''But when the West actually came to Kosovo, people started going to mosques. May 12, 2008 - I think there's a similar custom still present today in some Orthodox Christian churches but it's somehow always related exclusively to church interior. I'm not sure why.

May 14, 2008 - Headscarf is a symbol of modesty. If Muslims are invited to "get on board" by abandoning the headscarf (khimar), it would be good to invite the Christians to get on board too by abandoning their necklaces with the Cross at the end of it. Let's not forget other religions and their symbols. Why pick only at Muslims? And, so much for freedom of religion in Kosovo. American kids can freely wear their khimars and crosses at school :) If kids want schooling these symbols will not interfere.

Jul 20, 2008 - I am from Albania & I grow up in an atheist country!I never have seen in my life a mosque or a church till the moment that both of them were build in my native city in 2001! Personally I don't like religions at all,I am Atheist, they don't rappresent me and my Albanian culture! All these religions are danger for Albania because in the last years there are camming religious people from abroud that are doctrinating people using all kind of ways, even their poverty payng them money!

Jul 20, 2008 - You mean, foreign religious churches and cult missionaries? I remember watching a video about them. We also had a flood of those in Serbia during sanctions in 90s. They pretend to be there to offer humanitarian aid but they usually require people to convert to their religion/cult in order to receive relief packages.
