Aug 22, 2008 - I agree with your point! When I succeed, I say to myself "I did well!" (while acknowledging help from others). If I am going to accept blame instead of saying "god made me do it", I'm going to claim the credit too! In addition: The people who thank their god for their own victory miss the point that many of the people they defeated also believed in a god, perhaps the same one. It is like both sides in a war claiming "God is on our side". Poor God, faced with such a dilemma!

norhamdan1985 Says:

Aug 22, 2008 - Yea another good point I didn't touch on. I wanted to say, do you really think god helped you win over a fellow man who has the same beliefs? What makes you the special one? Its just annoying isn't it lol.

ShaundalynChic Says:

Aug 22, 2008 - So another way to say "they aren't acknowledging themselves and their hard work" is to say "I think selfishness is good and I don't like the Christian concepts of putting others first, studiously avoiding selfishness, bragging and self-promotion, and I hate being reminded of God because I don't want to think about him". Is that about it?

norhamdan1985 Says:

Aug 22, 2008 - Not at all. I don't find it selfish at all congratulating yourself and your family after a great accomplishment like winning the olympics. Plus yes, I don't want to hear about god. People say Church should be separated from state, which it should. I also think Church should be separated from Sport.

ShaundalynChic Says:

Aug 22, 2008 - "I don't find it selfish at all congratulating yourself" Some Christians do find it selfish and don't want to do that. If you win the Olympics you can congratulate yourself. If a Christian wins the Olympics, I expect they have earned the right to congratulate whoever they want and whoever they feel helped them the most. Frankly the world could do with a little less "me, me, me" and a little more humility.

ShaundalynChic Says:

Aug 22, 2008 - "do you really think god helped you win over a fellow man who has the same beliefs?" God helped the Christian be who he is, seems like you can't begrudge the winner thanking whoever he wants to.

norhamdan1985 Says:

Aug 22, 2008 - You are taking this out of hand with your whole 'people should be more modest in todays world' stuff. I agree with you, I am as modest as they come. But I am not talking about the world. I am talking about sports here. You know what sports are right. You are telling me athletes shouldn't be praising themselves for winning the Olympics?!? Something only a special human being can accomplish??....Is that what you are saying? Thats what it sounds like you are saying to me.

ShaundalynChic Says:

Aug 22, 2008 - "You are telling me athletes shouldn't be praising themselves for winning the Olympics" I am saying they won and should do what they want to do. You are seemingly making self praise mandatory, even if the Christians don't want to do it. Those that want to brag about themselves already do. We are talking about the Christians who are moddest and want to thank God for what he has done. Why shouldn't they if that is their choice?

ShaundalynChic Says:

Aug 22, 2008 - As for something only a special human being can accomplish, some of those special human beings want to thank their Creator for allowing them to be so special. I don't see why you are distinguishing between sports and the world. Humility is a nice thing in both. Self aggrandizement is a problem in both. With all the problems in sports with poor sportsmanship, why can't you see that? Particularly in team sports saying "I am the greatest" is out of place. Why begrudge a Christian thanking his lord?

norhamdan1985 Says:

Aug 23, 2008 - Its not out of place at all in sports because sports in the end is a competition. You are competing against one another to prove who is better. You are trying to become dominant over another team or person. If you can't handle someone like Muhammad Ali saying 'I am the greatest' after he just beat you, well then let me tell you something, you shouldn't be playing competitive sports. Religion should be separated from state just like in some real world politics. HaHa @ 'thanking THEIR creator'

norhamdan1985 Says:

Aug 23, 2008 - Shaundalyn. There is no god. Get it through your skull please. Christians helped themselves. God didn't do anything, because there is no god.

ShaundalynChic Says:

Aug 23, 2008 - "If you can't handle someone like Muhammad Ali saying" If he wins, Ali can say whatever he wants in praise of himself. But the subject isn't when Ali wins, we all regularly see the "look at me" guys praise themself after wins. It is when Ali has his jaw broken by a guy like Ken Norton and Norton wants to thank God for his victory. If you and Ali can't handle that you shouldn't be playing or watching competitive sports.

ShaundalynChic Says:

Aug 23, 2008 - "There is no god. Get it through your skull please" Prove it. That's just your opinion. I have my own opinion as do the many athletes that bother you by praising that same God.

norhamdan1985 Says:

Aug 24, 2008 - You can have your opinion..It might be silly but feel free. You want to go through life delusioned, wasting money and time on a psychotic fairy tale that caused so much war and troubles, then go right ahead.

ShaundalynChic Says:

Aug 24, 2008 - "wasting money" How do I waste money? My church has about 2 dozen families (100 members). We meet in a movie theatre on Sunday mornings (practically rent free at 9:00AM) and member's homes on other occasions. We pool some money and jointly decide how it is spent. Mostly on feeding people as we have a benevolent program that helps about 500 eat. We also adopted a poor apt complex of recent (and poor) immigrants and help them sort out the complexities of the US. Where do I waste money?

norhamdan1985 Says:

Aug 25, 2008 - I never said I couldn't handle it, I said it is ridiculous, and it truly is, because there is no god.

norhamdan1985 Says:

Aug 25, 2008 - Money never goes to waste when it is going to charity. Its unfortunate that it is in the name of god. I am sure, like most churches, you are putting the 'churchy pressure' on them to 'read the good book' at the least and maybe even join your church. Always hated how the churches influenced the desperate to join. Look it, we fed you and clothed you, you had nothing, there must be a god...here, take this book, come to this church. Actually an old brilliant idea to make money and spread silliness.
