Lessons from singing my first public National Anthem: Tom Nufer sang the Anthem at an NBA Utah Jazz v. Sonics game March 22, 2008 Jumbotron video and direct microphone feed from the stadium PA. I answered an open audition advertised in the paper. Check the team website for anthem auditions. If you want to pass the audition and maybe get invited back I suggest the following: 1) Respect. It's not about you. It's about the song and bringing some patriotism to the event. Respect the difficulty of the song and prepare well. Dress like you mean it. 2) Straight up. Unless you're American Idol star David Archuleta, Whitney Houston Pavarotti, or Marvin Gaye, sing it straight with no frills. 3) Be quick. Should be comfortably under 1:20. Everyone wants the game to start. 4) No fear. It's a tough song and a big audience. Just go for it. It's unlikely it'll be perfect (mine wasn't by any means, and this close up really shows it). Don't let the audition scare you from what will be a great experience. Hope you go for it, and let me know if you do.
