I purchased a container of H.T. Traders American Basmati Brown & Wild Rice Blend from my neighborhood Harris Teeter grocery store. The "best if used by date of April 24, 2009" assured me that my family had plenty of time to eat it safely. I know that brown rice is a healthy choice, but did not know it can also contain a healthy dose of protein as my container did. PROTEIN IN THE FORM OF BUGS, AND LOTS OF THEM, ACTUALLY THEY ARE RICE WEEVILS. Apparently harmless, but I certainly don't want to eat them. I did not see any bugs when I picked the container from the grocery store shelf. In fact, I didn't even think I needed to check for bugs before the purchase. Apparently, the RICE WEEVILS may have been in the rice grains when it was packaged, then "hatched" and ate their way through the grains of rice. As you can see, we had already eaten most of this rice - which is a nauseating thought. I am glad I had on my reading glasses and saw them before cooking and eating them this time. Two days ago, I contacted the store manager who said he did not see any bugs in the remaining containers. This product is still on the shelves - I was in there this morning and took photos. I also have contacted the following: US Dept of Agriculture (no reply), US Food and Drug Administration (told me sometimes this happens with less processed rice), and Harris Teeter Corporate offices. I don't think I'll be purchasing any H.T. Traders brand products any longer, and think I'll just stick to over-processed white rice.
